New High-Rise Opportunities: Melbourne’s Strategy to Address Population Growth
Big news for Melbourne! On Sunday, the Victorian State Government announced a new ‘higher density’ residential zone which will be applied across 50 areas within Melbourne. This initiative aims to accommodate Melbourne’s growing population by allowing more Melbournians to live near train stations and tram stops, making it conveniently easier to access shops, services, jobs and community facilities.
By 2051, the government expects this zoning to pave the way for 300,000 new homes, including high-rise apartment up to 10-20 storeys closer to the train stations and tram stops and low rise apartments up to 3-4 storeys within an 800m radius of these transport hubs. The first 25 area have been revealed, primarily in the south-east along the Sandringham, Frankston and Glen Waverly railway lines, with the remaining areas to be announced by year’s end.
The new zone will expand upon the recently announce 10 activity centres (Broadmeadows, Camberwell, Chadstone, Epping, Frankston, Moorabbin, Niddrie, North Essendon, Preston and Ringwood), which will collectively support 60,000 new homes.
